Kyoto-fu Uji-shi - Byodoin & Uji River 京都府宇治市 - 平等院 & 宇治川
Byodoin 平等院 is a Buddhist temple located in the city just west of the Uji River 宇治川. The most famous building in the temple is the
Phoenix Hall (Hououdou) 鳳凰堂. This building is shown in the back side of the Japanese 10 yen coin, while the Phoenix statue on the
top of the building is shown in the back side of the Japanese 10000 yen note. In December 1994, UNESCO listed the building as
a World Heritage Site as part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto". The Phoenix Hall, the great statue of Amida 阿弥陀 inside
it, and several other items at Byodoin 平等院 are national treasures of Japan.
