Hokkaido Abashiri-shi - Notoro Lake - Sangosou
Sangosou ("coral grass") is the Japanese name of Glasswort, a plant which grows in salt marshes. There are several salt marshes in north eastern part of Hokkaido, and the Ubaranai area at the south shore of Notoroko (Notoro Lake) is famous for the Sangosou blossom.
At its peak season between mid Sep and early Oct, the blossom of the Sangosou community in the area would make the area looks like a big red carpet, attracting 2 hundred thousand tourists each year.
Unfortunately, due to foreign soil invasion problem back in 2010, currently the Sangosou community in the area is facing total destruction.
The nearest train station is Abashiri station of JR Senmou Main Line.
